Interesed in Private adoption in Taiwan?
Good news! Private adoption is very much alive and well in Taiwan. If you were to ask me to tell you some things about Private adoption though.. I would start with..."Adoption of any kind is not for the week of heart, and private is a step above that."
Private adoption in Taiwan basically means that there is no american side agency to represent you in Taiwan, to find a child for you that is available for adoption, and there will be no one to hold your hand through your adoption or paperwork.
Depending upon the private institute you decide on working with, they may or may not do such things as help with paperwork, represent you in court and take custody of your child during the court procedures.
Here is a little check list that you might want to look at before deciding to adopt via private channels.
1. Are you willing to do most if not all the paperwork yourself with little help?
2. Do you desire to work more closely with the Taiwanese people?
3. Are you prepared for any "unexpected moments" that may arise from working with a private organization?
4. Are you ok with learning more about the Taiwan/American adoption process so that you can make better and more informed decisions about your adoption journey?
5. Are you ok with possibly having less information about your child than with a typical agency?
The above yes or no list is basically just a little of what you need to think about before jumping into a private adoption. Just as with America's domestic adoption, there are more risks and problems that can arise at any moment. BUT also just like America's domestic adoption, there is plenty of success with Private Taiwan adoptions.
With ANY adoption there are risks and possibilities beyond your control... but that is a whole other post.
